Domestic Violence Action Month

Stories, Strength, and Solidarity

October was Domestic Violence Action Month, and YWCA Walla Walla marked the occasion with connection, reflection, and community action.

In preparation for DVAM, survivors and supporters gathered in early September for “Our Stories, Our Strength.”

The evening activities, light refreshments with conversation and storytelling in partnership with local entrepreneur and survivor Sarah Magill, focused on the healing power of  stories.

Sarah recently published her story in a collection titled Believe Beyond. Her decision to share some of the hardest times of her life was deliberate.  “I didn’t go through hell, learn all these lessons, just so I could be quiet and keep to myself,” Sarah said. “I hope someone reads my story and thinks, ‘If she can do it, I can do it.’”

Participants were invited to share their own stories, and advocates were on hand to offer support.

TAKING STEPS.

On a sunny fall day three weeks later, community folks gathered to “Take Steps Against Domestic Violence” with a walk down Main Street.

The route was like a scavenger hunt with posters along the way promoting YWCA domestic violence services. Each poster also shared an inspiring message from a survivor.

Joining the procession were partners from the Washington State Penitentiary Diversity Committee and the women of Hope Street, whose chants carried messages of hope and strength.

Strong survivors lead the way: — Y – W – C – A!
No excuse, stop the abuse!

County Commissioner Todd Kimball shared memories of volunteering with his family to repaint shelter rooms, and Jackie Lancaster’s powerful story of survival moved some to tears.

Walking the walk: A survivor tells her story, a poster offers hope, and purple-clad marchers chant their way through downtown Walla Walla.
