Ice Chalet

Located just next to the YWCA's main offices on Birch Street, the Ice Chalet offers group lessons, public skating sessions, hockey and lots more! For more than 45 years, the YWCA Ice Chalet has been a great place to have fun on the ice.

The Ice Chalet welcomes nearly 20,000 people of all ages. The Walla Walla Figure Skating Club and hockey leagues—as well as broomball and public skating sessions—remain popular among all ages. Group and individual lessons make learning to skate fun, no matter what level people begin.

5 to 5:45 p.m. Kids skate (12 & under and parents);
free admission, skate rental $1.50

Figure Skating Freestyle Times
($7.00 per hour)

Monday: 4 to 5 p.m.; 5 to 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 4 to 5 p.m.

Ice Skating Institute Classes

Lessons for all levels and ages are offered in four six-week sessions at the following times:

Tuesday: 5 to 6 p.m. (Tiny Tots, Pre-Alpha, Alpha, Beta, Gamma)

Wednesday: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. (Adults, 16 & over, Beginner, Intermediate)

Saturday: 11 a.m. to 12 Noon (Tiny Tots, Pre-Alpha, Alpha)

  • $49 per session (6 classes), includes skate rental
  • Annual YWCA membership required
  • Minimum class size: 5 students
  • Register at YWCA front desk or at the Ice Chalet

2008 - 2009 Sessions

  1. September 30 - November 8
  2. November 11 - December 20
  3. January 6 - February 14
  4. February 17 - March 28

Class level description/skills

Tiny Tots: (ages 31/2 to 5 years) Students learn about standing on ice, falling down and getting up, marching in place/marching forward, forward swizzles, backward wiggles, snowplow stop, correct body position.

Pre-Alpha: (ages 5 and older) Students learn correct body position, falling down and getting up, forward and backward swizzles, one- and two-foot glides, backward wiggle, two-foot jump in place, two-foot snowplow stop.

Alpha: Forward stroking, forward crossovers, one-foot snowplow stop

Beta: Backward stroking, backward crossovers, T-stops

Gamma: Forward 3-turns (outside edge), mohawks, hockey stop

Delta: Forward 3-turns (inside edge), forward one-foot glides on a curve, shoot-the-duck, lunges, bunny hops

ISI Recreational Hockey Program

The Ice Skating Institute (ISI) Hockey Test Program is designed to teach the basic skills required to skate and play the game of hockey. Our mission statement is to create an ice hockey educational program that develops knowledge and skills that are instructed in the simplest and most easily understandable form. To create a safe, focused, fun, rewarding environment, taught by enthusiastic instructors, to which PLAYERS and FAMILIES will anxiously return season after season. ISI lessons are offered in four 6-week sessions.

  • $49 per session (6 weeks), includes skate rental
  • Annual YWCA & ISI membership required
  • Rental hockey equipment - $10 per 6 week session
  • Minimum class size: 5 students
  • Register at YWCA front desk or at the Ice Chalet

2008- 2009 Sessions

  1. September 30 to November 9
  2. November 11 to December 21
  3. January 6 to February 15
  4. February 17 to March 29

Class level description/skills

Beginner-all ages: Students learn falling down and getting up, "T" push off position, gliding on 2 feet, snow plow stops and forward sculling.

Level 1: Students learn 1 foot glides, correct hockey stride, hockey stops, introduction to backward skating, beginning stick handling, forehand shots, forward crossovers, and position identification.

Level 2: Students learn backward skating, backward crossovers, backward stops, 3 step starts, mohawk turns, passing, backhand shots, and game strategy.

Level 3: Students learn edge control, checking, power strides, specific offensive drills, specific defensive drills, advanced stick handling, and slapshots.

Kids Hockey Stick Night
Monday: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.
Admission: $3.50 | Skate rental: $1.50

For ages 14 and younger. Full equipment required.

Adult Hockey Stick Night
Monday: 8:30 to 10 p.m.
Admission: $6 | Skate rental: $1.50

For ages 15 and older. No passes accepted. Full equipment required.

Nostalgia Skate
Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Relax and skate to easy listening and classical music selections, or bring your own music!

Adults Only Skate (ages 16 and older)
Wednesday: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.
Admission: $3 | Skate rental: included in admission

Kids Skate
Friday: 5 to 5:45 p.m.
Admission: FREE | Skate rental: $1.50

For children ages 12 and younger and their parents.

Family Skate
Sunday: 2 to 4 p.m.
Admission: $3.50 | Skate rental: $1.50

Specially priced session for 2 or more family members.

"Cheap" Skates (No school days)
Admission: $3 | Skate rental: $1.50

March 6, 30; April 1, 3 (2009)

Skate sharpening available: $6.00 for hockey skates, $7.00 for figure skates.

The Ice Chalet is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Easter Sunday
